Getting the same messages over and over

Problem: Every time you download your mail, you get the same messages and it never finishes downloading.

Solution: This is what happens when someone sends you a very large email that has corrupted. By the normal procedure, your computer contacts the mailserver and says "Give me my mail!" The mailserver sends it over. Your computer then comes back to the mailservers and says, "I have it!" The mailserver then deletes it. When a message corrupts or is too big to download, you are forced to quit before the server gets the command to delete the downloaded messages, so the next time you try, the same ones come down again before the bad one hangs. What to do? The first thing to do is go to www.povn.net, click on the webmail link in the menu bar. Click on your mailserver and log in. Try to delete the offending message. If you can delete it, the rest will be fine. If it is too big or too corrupt to delete, you will have to call the office and have us delete it from the server.

Every time I am trying to download a big email the server resets the connection.

Problem: You are downloading a big email or attachment and after a few minutes get a message that the server has reset the connection.

Solution: This is what happens when you are downloading a large message with a short "check messages" time.  If, for example, you are trying to download a message that will take fifteen minutes to download but your email program is set to check the mail every ten minutes, at the ten minute timer, your program will stop the current download and start over while complaining that the server has "reset the connection".  If fact, it is the mail program that has done it.  Go into your Tools, Options and set the computer to check messages every 60 minutes. When the big one has downloaded, you can set it back to a shorter time.

I can receive email but it won't send.

Problem:  You can receive email but when your try to send, the message stays in the Outbox and refuses to leave.  You may get an error messages that refers to "550 not a local host".

Solution:  In Outlook Express, click on Tools, Accounts, the Mail tab.  Click the Properties button to the right, then the Server tab.  At the very bottom of the page, put a check mark in "My Server Requires Authentication".  In Outlook, click on Tools, Email Accounts, View or Change.  Select your account, then click Change. Click the Settings button by the Outgoing Mail Server.  Click the Outgoing Server tab, put a check mark in "My Server Requires Authentication. Other programs will have a similar procedure.

Can't delete messages in Web Interface

Problem: You can read and reply to messages in the Web Interface but some functions are missing, such as the ability to delete.

Solution: This is always the case with Netscape 4.7 and earlier and some of the earlier versions of Internet Explorer. The older mail programs either do not have Java capability or have limited Java capability. The IMail Web Interface is dependent upon a current version of Java. If you are having trouble with Java scripts and applets, Click Here download a current version of Java.

My email worked yesterday but today it won't work.

Problem: Outlook Express was fine, but now just says it can't contact the server. The settings look fine.

Solution:  There can be a number of different causes for this problem.  If you are using a firewall, especially Norton System Works, try turning off the email scanning.  It is best to never run the outgoing scanners anyway, as it sometimes eats outgoing mail while Outlook thinks it has sent it.  Usually just turning off the email scanning will fix that problem, though sometimes the entire firewall must be disabled.

Sometimes, even though the settings all look fine, the mail account just quits working. It can generally be fixed by deleting the account and putting it back in. This will not affect the mail in your Inbox.
In Outlook or Outlook Express, click on "Tools" then on "Accounts". Click on the mail tab.

Click on the mail account and click "Remove".

*REBOOT THE COMPUTER! This step is important.*

When the account is gone, click on "Add", choose "Mail" and click "Next".

Fill in your Display name (this is the way you want your name to appear in the return address of people you email) and click "Next".

Fill in your email address and click "Next"

Your incoming mailserver is a POP3 server, its name will be mail.XXX.com, where XXX is the second part of your email address. For example, if your email address is johnsmith@sandpoint.net, your incoming mailserver will be mail.sandpoint.net. Your outgoing mailserver will be the same as the incoming mailserver in most cases. Click "Next"

Your account name will already be filled in - it must be the same as the first part of your email address, in the example above it would be johnsmith. Sometimes, however, that will still notwork so put in your entire email address in that case. You may fill in your password and check "remember password" if you want it to save your password. Do not check the other two boxes on that page.

Click "Next" and "Finish".

Back in the Accounts window, click the Properties button to the right, then the Servers tab.  At the very bottom of the page, put a check mark in "My Server Requires Authentication".  In Outlook, click on Tools, Email Accounts, View or Change.  Select your account, then click Change. Click the Settings button by the Outgoing Mail Server.  Click the Outgoing Server tab, put a check mark in "My Server Requires Authentication".

Checking Email From a Remote Location

Problem: Checking Email From a Remote Location

Solution: You can check your email remotely by going to our web page http://www.povn.net/, on the menubar towards the top of the page you will see where it says "Web Mail", click on this, then click on "yourserver.com or net", this will take you to the login page. Enter your email address and password and login. You will be in your inbox and be able to read and reply to your mail from there.

Why don't I receive the programs my friends email me?

Problem: Programs my friends email me don't arrive.

Solution: Due to the many dangerous viruses that are destroying people's computers, we filter certain dangerous attachments at the server. Have your friend change the extension on the file to .txt and send it. When you have saved the file, change the name back to .exe. For example, have your friend change the file name elfbowling.exe to elfbowling.txt and send you the file. Save the file, then right click it and rename it to elfbowling.exe. It will then work fine.

Sometimes I send email and it never arrives. What happened to it?

Problem: Email you send or that someone sends you does not arrive.

Solution: First, be sure that there is no outgoing virus scanner running. Sometimes they eat outgoing mail while your email program thinks it sent and puts a copy in your sent items file. Have your recipients be sure that their spam/virus filters are not deleting the messages. If the email is coming to you, be sure to check your Postini Spam Center.
